EU Code Against Disinformation: What You Need To Know

EU Code of Practice on Disinformation

The dangers of disinformation threaten online users, communities, platforms, and even electoral systems. As part of a breaking development to mitigate the spread of intentionally false information, the EU’s 27 member states have published the 2022 Strengthened Code of Practice on Disinformation. The code will go into effect on December 16, 2022, and its regulations will be mandatory for all Very Large Online Platforms active within the EU.

Regulations for smaller platforms are also on the horizon. When the EU’s groundbreaking Digital Services Act takes effect beginning in January 2023, smaller platforms must adopt and implement new risk mitigation requirements to curb the spread of on-platform disinformation.
